Rep. Dennis Kucinich, the anti-war Ohio congressman, announced Wednesday that he will retire from the House at the end of his term, opting not to launch a bid for a house seat in Washington state after losing a primary for his own seat.
Kucinich's primary loss came in March, when he was
...more defeated by fellow Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur after the Republican-led state legislature combined their districts. He then explored a run in Washington.
"At the end of this term I will have served sixteen years in the House of Representatives, leading the way for peace, to bring an end to the wars, for workers' rights, for health care for all, for monetary policy reform and to end the corrupting influence which money has on our political decision-making process," he said.
The Washington Democratic Party chairman, Dwight Pelz, told the Seattle Times that if Kucinich ran in his state, his legacy would be one of a "narcissist who lost two Congressional races in two states the same year."
Kucinich unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004 and 2008.

In a ranking of the 100 stars who've amassed major amounts of both fame and wealth, Jennifer Lopez has landed in the top spot.
Thanks to the $52 million Lopez earned over the past year and her ubiquitous media presence, the now single mom of two is the No. 1 celebrity in Hollywood, according
...more to Forbes.
The "Idol" judge even bested Oprah Winfrey, who came in at No. 2 on the list, and Lady Gaga, who slipped from being No. 1 last year to No. 5 on the 2012 ranking.
And while Forbes notes that Lopez's decision to sign up for "American Idol" contributed nicely to her $52 million in earnings for the year, the singer/actress/reality star isn't sure if she'll return to the reality show that revived her career.
Now that things are moving again at warp speed for J. Lo - her upcoming world tour, movie career (her latest,"What to Expect When You're Expecting," arrives Friday), and even her alleged romance with choreographer Casper Smart - she just might be too busy.
"I don't know," the 42-year-old singer said Tuesday on "Ellen" about her future on the singing competition.
"I enjoy it. I really do enjoy it," Lopez said. Still, "I miss doing other things," she explained. "It really does lock you down."
Then there's the issue of her two young children with soon-to-be ex-husband Marc Anthony, whom Lopez said need her now more than ever.
"They're getting more mobile," she said of her 4-year-old twins Max and Emme. "They're about to go to school. I just don't know. I don't know."
If her indecision feels remarkably familiar, it's because she had the same hesitation about signing on for another season of "Idol" last year.

Seventeen years after the end of the war, Ratko Mladic gives the impression he is still on the battlefield in what was once Yugoslavia, staring down his enemy, glowering across the courtroom. Even gesticulating death threats.
What the former Bosnian Serb military commander hopes to gain and
...more exactly what he is trying to defend are unclear. He may be the only one who expects an outcome other than guilty.
He seems almost eager to fight all comers to the bitter end.
The women of Srebrenica are in the Hague too. All these years later, they stand before him, with international justice on their side.
These women -- the widows, mothers, victims of one of the worst atrocities since World War II -- occupy the moral high ground. They will not be moved.
But they have sunk so low in despair and desolation that even a bone unearthed in a mass grave raises spirits -- maybe something tangible from a loved one, something to cling to, a hint that truth and justice may not escape them.
Almost 1,000 miles away, most of Bosnia goes about its business with little talk of the war; life goes on. If a question is unwittingly asked by an outsider, it is met with grace, but it hangs awkwardly over the conversation, like an unwanted guest at a dinner table everyone would rather not be there.
So back here, in a courtroom in the Netherlands, it is the women of Srebrenica who have the moral weight to slug it out. Eight thousand murders in Srebrenica alone. This is what gives their families such power: There are so many of them.
They've become a force Mladic must reckon with, by proxy of course. The international community in the form of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), controls this courtroom battlefield. They are such a force, in fact that the whole country must listen, too, awkward or not. No amount of reconciliation -- not that there is a lot -- can really happen until the women of Srebrenica and their families get

Larry Bird is the first winner of the NBA MVP, Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year awards, earning the top front-office honor Wednesday, the Pacers announced.
"This is an honor for the Indiana Pacers, not an award for Larry Bird," Bird said in a team release.
Bird received 12
...more first-place votes and was one of 19 general managers to earn a vote. RC Buford of the Spurs was second in voting done by a panel of team executives.
"Everyone in this franchise put in a lot of work and showed a lot of patience as we have tried to get this team to a level on and off the court the fans in Indiana can be proud of," Bird said. "You always believe, and hope, the players you get will fit into a plan and I'm very proud of what our guys and our coaches have accomplished so far this year."
The Pacers' president of basketball operations announced this season would be his last.
Bird hired Frank Vogel as head coach on July 6, 2011, after Vogel guided the Pacers to the playoffs as interim coach to end the 2010-11 season. He also has hit on multiple draft picks, including Paul George and Tyler Hansbrough, acquired Roy Hibbert in a draft-day trade and signed free agent forward David West before the 2011-12 season.
The Pacers earned the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs with a 42-24 record, fifth-best in the NBA. The Pacers and Miami Heat are tied 1-1 entering Game 3 of the conference semifinals Thursday in Indianapolis.

Though Joe Vitt will coach the New Orleans Saints in Sean Payton's absence, no one will sit in the suspended coach's chair while he's away.
The team plans to leave Payton's seat on the bus and plane empty this season as well as in meetings, according to a report in The Times-Picayune of New
...more Orleans.
Vitt told the paper that coach's absence is already felt.
"Since I've been here, as soon as we got off the practice field, Sean and I would go right to a meeting and talk about what we wanted to do differently in the afternoon," Vitt said. "I didn't have that this year. We also would do a lot of communicating on the practice field. What do you think of this? What do you think of that? That was a huge void right from the get-go and something we're going to have to get used to."
Payton is prohibited from speaking with the team about football matters during his suspension and can only talk with a member of the team about a non-football issue with the team's legal counsel present, the paper said.

Mitchell Guist, a star of the reality TV show "Swamp People," died of "natural causes," a local sheriff in Louisiana said.
Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack released the preliminary autopsy conclusion Wednesday, although he said final results will not be available for another four or
...more five weeks.
Guist, 47, was working to build a houseboat when he appeared to have a seizure and fell backwards in his boat, said Assumption Parish Sheriff Mike Waguespack.
He was with another person on the Intercoastal Waterway, about 75 miles from New Orleans, at the time of his collapse.
That person, who did not want to be identified, got Guist back to a boat landing, performed CPR and called his wife, who in turn called 911, said the sheriff.
Guist was transferred to the Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City, where he was pronounced dead Monday.
Daniel Wiltz, with the St. Martin Parish coroner's office, declined to comment on the autopsy except to say that it was pending.
"Right now, we're thinking about him almost every minute," said Brian Catalina, executive producer of "Swamp People." "We've lost a really important part of our family and a treasured friend."
"Swamp People" is the popular History Channel TV series that chronicles the lives of alligator hunters.
Now in its third season, the series is set in Louisiana's Atchafalaya Swamp, and focuses on Cajun alligator hunters during the 30-day hunting season that the History Channel notes is "crucial to their survival."
Guist appeared on the show alongside his brother, Glenn Guist.
"The two were inseparable. These guys were born in the same house that they both still lived in, up until yesterday. They were two peas in a pod for sure. Neither had ever married. They were just as brothers as you could be," said Catalina on Tuesday.
Soon after news of Guist's death broke, tributes began pouring in on the brothers' official fan club Facebook page.

A full autopsy report on the death of conservative blogger and activist Andrew Breitbart was released Wednesday, concluding that he died of heart failure as a result of coronary artery disease and an enlarged heart, coroner officials announced.
No significant trauma was detected, and foul play
...more is not suspected, the Los Angeles County coroner's report said.
Breitbart, 43, died on March 1 after collapsing on a sidewalk in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood. He was transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and pronounced dead about 40 minutes later when emergency physicians were unable to revive him.
According to the autopsy report, Breitbart had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2011 after being rushed by ambulance to the same hospital because he had shortness of breath.
He was released from the hospital after a few days in 2011, and he began exercising and dieting, the report said.
The 6-foot-3, 251-pound Breitbart was considered "a light drinker," and he had 0.04 gram percent of alcohol in his blood and heart at the time of his death, the autopsy report said.
He also had 60% narrowing of the coronary artery, the report said.
A few weeks before his death, Breitbart had been recovering from flu symptoms and complained about "being under a lot of stress" but no further problems were noted, according to the autopsy findings.
No prescription or illicit drugs were found in his system, the report said.

The early-morning slaughter of four Florida siblings at the hands of what authorities say was their mother is an "almost unheard of" case, crime experts said Wednesday.
Investigators are still trying to determine what happened at the Port St. John home of 33-year-old Tonya Thomas early Tuesday
...more morning. But Patricia Pearson, author of "When She was Bad: How and Why Women Get Away with Murder," said mass killings with women as a perpetrator are rare -- and when they do happen, they typically aren't committed with guns.
"If a gun was used, that's almost unheard of," Pearson told CNN.
Women make up about 5% of the ranks of mass killers, said James Alan Fox, a criminologist at Northeastern University. And most cases in which women kill their families involve young children, said Fox, the author of "Extreme Killing: Understanding Serial and Mass Murder."
Sheriff's deputies in Brevard County say Thomas turned a .38-caliber revolver on herself after killing her two sons, 15-year-old Jaxs Johnson and 12-year-old Joel Johnson, and two daughters, 17-year-old Pebbles Johnson and 13-year-old Jazlin Johnson. The children went to a neighbor's house when the shooting started, with at least one reporting being shot, according to recordings of 911 calls released by the sheriff's department Tuesday -- but they returned while neighbors were on the phone with deputies, and more shots followed.
"The two kids were in the front yard, one banging on the front door, 'Help us! Help us!'" a neighbor told dispatchers. "There was so much confusion going on we couldn't tell who shot who, and then when I was talking to you the one kid said his mom shot him."
Investigators don't know a motive for the killings, said Lt. Tod Goodyear, a spokesman for the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. But he said neighbors have described a history of public arguments among Thomas and her children, and Jaxs Johnson was arrested after a pair of fights with his mother in April.
